Do super shoes make you a faster runner? 👟

An expert statement by Van Hooren and colleagues brings together the evidence on advanced footwear technology.

The reported average benefits:
🟢 Approximately 2–4% lower energy cost at the same running speed.
🟢 Approximately 1–3% better running performance, depending on the event and conditions.

These are group averages, not a promise for every runner. Energy savings also do not translate directly into an equivalent reduction in race time.

And the benefit involves more than a carbon plate. Lightweight, springy foam, stiffening elements and curved shoe geometry work together.

What does this mean for runners and coaches?

✅ Compare different models at your intended running pace.
✅ Use repeated measurements when assessing small differences in running economy.
✅ Consider your own response rather than assuming the shoe that works for another runner will work best for you.

⚠️ Injury effects remain uncertain. These shoes redistribute loading between tissues, but changes in loading do not automatically mean more or fewer injuries.
⚠️ Potential long-term training benefits still need stronger evidence.

Super shoes can improve performance. Finding the right shoe for the individual remains the challenge.

Have you noticed different responses to different models?
