Running Power Meter
Can we measure running power with foot-worn sensors?
While power measurement has long been established in cycling, translating this concept to running remains challenging. Several commercial systems—such as Stryd—claim to provide valid and reliable running power data.
However, current evidence paints a mixed picture.
✅ Some studies indicate good validity and reliability under controlled conditions.
⚠️ Others show notable errors and highlight that factors like shoe type, distort results.
Additionally, the influence of surface, incline, and environmental conditions are unknown.
In short: foot-worn sensors might estimate running power with acceptable accuracy—but before they can be confidently used in practice, more research under diverse real-world conditions is needed.
Take-home message: promising technology, but not yet applicable with confidence in practice.
